Wirral University Teaching Hospitals (WUTH)

Due to major construction projects at Aintree Hospitals, Liverpool and to initiate what would be a rotation of the OSCE/Orals between hospitals, the course on this occasion will be staged at WUTH (aka. Arrowe Park Hospitals). The principle advantages of this venue are twofold. Firstly, there is a new Education Centre which could not be more suited to our purposes. And secondly, there is ample en-suite accommodation available on site.

The cost of single accommodation is £20 per night and is excellent value for money.

Notice - The Waiting List Protocol

In the event of the course being over-subscribed, it becomes necessary to establish the Definitive Course List (DCL) as early as possible so as to afford unsuccessful applicants the opportunity to look for a course elsewhere.

Many would-be candidates apply for the course well ahead of time such that, by the time of the Closing Date of Application for respective Examination, they change their mind for whatever reason.

Some of these trainees do not let us know that they will not be attending the OSCE/Orals course with the result there is a danger of us denying places to applicants whose names are on the Waiting List plus we could be left with unfilled places which seriously disturbs the dynamics of the course which are strictly structured to exactly 48 candidates.

Consequently, as soon as we have 48 applicants, we contact those applicants asking them to confirm they wish to reserve their place with the caveat that, should they confirm, their cheques will be presented for clearance. If their cheque is pre-dated, they will be asked to submit a second cheque for immediate clearance, the original cheque being destroyed.

Once we have identified those wishing to withdraw from the course, we trawl through any Waiting List asking the applicants to confirm their wish for a place and, where necessary, to submit a second cheque as outlined above.

When all the places are confirmed, the three Observer Places are offered to any remaining on the Waiting List

Observers attend the course on the understanding that, should any of the 48 listed candidates be Late or Fail to Attend, they will (in order) be allocated the vacant slot. Should the replaced candidate eventually turn-up, he or she will lose the place and remain as an Observer, the course fee being refunded. Observers enjoy full exposure to the course, the only difference being that they are not examined formally on the Thursday and Friday although they are permitted to ‘observe’ at these sessions. Observers do not pay any Course Fee. To date, every Observer we have had has greatly appreciated the opportunity and, so far, only 1 out of a possible 12 (May 08) has failed to pass the exam.

When all places are filled, those applicants remaining on the Waiting List are advised accordingly as soon as possible thus allowing them the chance to apply elsewhere.

Possible alternatives include the Primary Weekend Viva Course and the Primary Weekend OSCE Course both of which courses are successful with Pass Rates on a par with the OSCE/Orals week course.

(Please see respective Websites for information on these courses)

“Excellent course”

“Impressed by the dedication and patience of the staff organising the course. Thank you. Thanks to medical students especially Mark (CVS examination).”

'Excellent course, even though I felt like I didn't know anything, still I know a lot more than I did. Have had it hammered into me how to present better and hopefully with a bit of common sense this will do!”

“Couldn't have done this much work in a week on my own!”

“Excellent.”

“It has been very useful, especially just before exam to refresh all the important topics.”

“The structured way of answering questions is the best thing that this course teaches us.”

“Excellent course.”

The Observers

“First of all thanks for giving me the opportunity to be an observer in the course. I don't think we are discriminated in anyway and we utilised almost 80-90% of the sessions.”

“It is very useful to refresh the knowledge in the last minute and the course gave us a lot of opportunity to identify our pitfalls.”

“Thanks once again for all the food coupons and for an excellent experience.”

“The course was of a big value to me although being an observer. It exposed me to the ideas and questions I might get asked in the real exam. I benefited a lot from the different and versatile OSCE stations I've been through.”

. “This definitely helped me to be more cautious and try to be more presentable.” “I was lucky to have a group of observers. We worked together. Enjoyed all lectures and anatomy refresher.”
